MERIDIAN, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – A friendly competition took center stage during Meridian’s Spring Fling at Sowashee Park as the Meridian Police Department faced off against the Meridian Fire Department in a community basketball game.
“We have our annual Police Department vs. Fire Department basketball game,” Mayor Percy Bland said.
Bland said the game is a fun way to bring the community together while highlighting the city’s first responders.
“They’re our first responders. They’re our public safety guys. They’re a part of the community,” Bland said.
The mayor said he was glad to see strong community support for the event.
“I’m out here with the CAO, Craig Hitt, most of the firemen and police officers. It’s Spring Fling, we’re at Sowashee Courts in Romande Walker’s district. We have some other councilmen here today. I’m just really proud to see everyone out in the community,” Bland said.
Bland said the city hopes to continue the tradition.
“We’re going to try and do this once a year,” he said.
The Spring Fling celebration continues tomorrow at 3 p.m. at Highland Park, with food, activities and family-friendly fun for the community.
