Severe storms leave one dead, thousands without power across Mississippi

PEARL – State officials are assessing damage across several Mississippi counties after severe weather moved through the state Wednesday, leaving one person dead and thousands without electricity.

According to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, the death and three injuries were reported in Lawrence County following the storms on March 11.

As of 9:30 a.m. Thursday, about 40,300 power outages were reported statewide. Officials said outages had peaked at more than 48,000 during the height of the storms.

Preliminary reports show storm damage in six counties: Amite, Lawrence, Lincoln, Smith, Pike and Walthall. Officials said damage reports include homes damaged, downed trees and widespread power outages.

MEMA said the numbers are preliminary and could change as damage assessments continue.

Residents who experienced storm damage are encouraged to file insurance claims, take photos of the damage and report it to their county emergency management agency or through MEMA’s online self-reporting tool.

Officials also urged residents with immediate unmet needs to contact their local county emergency management agency for assistance.
