According to organizers, the medications were collected at the Sam’s Club location during the one-day event.

Officials said the effort helps keep potentially dangerous medications out of the wrong hands, reduces the risk of accidental ingestion by children and older adults, and helps prevent chemicals from entering the local water supply.

Organizers thanked residents who participated by cleaning out their medicine cabinets and dropping off old prescriptions.

For those who missed the event, officials said safe disposal drop boxes remain available at the Mississippi Highway Patrol Driver’s License Station, 910 Highway 11 and 80 East in Meridian, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and at the Meridian Police Department, 510 22nd Ave. in Meridian.
