LOWNDES COUNTY – The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about donation letters circulating in the area that claim to raise money for local law enforcement equipment, including bulletproof vests.

According to the sheriff’s office, the mailers reference the United States Deputy Sheriffs Association, or USDSA.
The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office said it is not affiliated with the organization and does not receive funding, equipment or other benefits from it.
Authorities said the mailers may use official-looking seals, emotional language, references to local communities or the names of government officials in an effort to appear legitimate.
The sheriff’s office warned residents to be cautious about claims that donations will directly benefit local law enforcement.
Anyone who receives one of the mailers is advised not to send money, provide personal information or call the number listed on the solicitation.
Residents who want to support local law enforcement are encouraged to contact the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office directly using a phone number obtained independently.
The department is also urging people to research any organization requesting donations before providing personal or financial information.
