Smoking materials blamed for deadly Brookdale Senior Living fire in Clinton

CLINTON – The State Fire Marshal’s Office has determined that improperly discarded smoking materials were the most probable cause of the deadly fire at Brookdale Senior Living in Clinton.

The fire happened Wednesday, Oct. 21.

Investigators said the fire started outside near the entrance to the maintenance office before spreading into a residential area of the facility.

According to the State Fire Marshal’s Office, the flames spread quickly because combustible materials had been stored near the maintenance entrance. Those items included a mattress, box springs and other household items.

Officials said smoke alarms were present and working. The building also had a fire suppression system in place, and emergency officials were notified early by the fire alarm company.

The fire killed 81-year-old Sandra Laird and 82-year-old Harris Anthony.

State Fire Marshal and Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney offered condolences to their families and others affected by the fire.

“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy,” Chaney said.

The fire caused extensive damage to the senior living facility and forced the evacuation of residents.
