Northeast High Named Mississippi Blue Ribbon School

MERIDIAN, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – Northeast Lauderdale High School has been named a 2026 Mississippi Blue Ribbon School. The Mississippi Department of Education gives the honor to a small group of schools each year.

Only four schools in the state made the list this year. Also, Northeast is the only high school on it.

The Lauderdale County School District shared the good news on X and in a video on its YouTube channel.

Why Northeast Was Picked

A school can earn a Blue Ribbon in two ways. Some schools win because their students post some of the best test scores in the state. Other schools win because they close achievement gaps.

Northeast won in the second group. An achievement gap is the difference in test scores between groups of students. So the honor means Northeast has done strong work to help every group of students move forward.

The state looked at test results, how each group of students did, and graduation rates. Each school also had to send in a long application. It covered school culture, lessons, testing, teacher training, and leadership. It also covered how families and the community take part.

The Other Schools

Two elementary schools won for top test scores. They are Ackerman Elementary in Choctaw County and Madison Station Elementary in Madison County.

Oakdale Elementary in Rankin County joined Northeast in the gap closing group. That means three of the four winners are elementary schools.

A New State Award

The U.S. Department of Education used to run the Blue Ribbon program. However, the national program ended in 2025. After that, Mississippi started its own version so it could keep honoring top schools.

The state award uses the same rules as the old national one. Also, the state says it carries the same weight. This is only the second year Mississippi has given out the award.

Last year, the first winners got a plaque and a flag to fly at the school. They also got a formal proclamation from the governor.

What It Means for Lauderdale County

Northeast High serves students in grades 9 through 12 in the Lauderdale County School District. Most of its students come up from Northeast Elementary and Northeast Middle School.

For families in the area, the honor is a sign of steady work by students, teachers, and staff. Parents who want to learn more can call the Lauderdale County School District Central Office at 601-693-1683.
