Tunica County Sheriff’s Office Shares Hot-Weather Safety Tips for Pets

As temperatures continue to rise across the region, the Tunica County Sheriff’s Office is urging pet owners to take extra precautions to keep their furry companions safe during the summer months.

Hot weather can be dangerous—and even deadly—for pets, especially when proper precautions aren’t taken. The Sheriff’s Office shared the following hot-weather tips to help ensure your pets stay safe and comfortable all season long:

  • Avoid midday walks – Pavement can get scorching hot and burn your pet’s paws. It’s best to walk them early in the morning or later in the evening when the ground is cooler.

  • Keep them hydrated – Always provide fresh water and make sure your pet drinks often, particularly on hot days.

  • Never leave pets in a car – Even a few minutes in a parked vehicle can become life-threatening.

  • Provide shade and rest – Make sure pets have access to shady spots and take plenty of breaks. This is especially important for short-nosed breeds and senior pets.

  • Watch for signs of heatstroke – Excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, or collapse can all indicate heatstroke. If your pet shows any of these signs, contact your vet immediately.

The Sheriff’s Office encourages all pet owners to stay mindful of the heat and take these simple steps to ensure a safe and happy summer for their four-legged family members.

“Let’s keep tails wagging and whiskers twitching safely all summer long!” the department added in their announcement.
