Mississippi Blood Services is urgently appealing to the public for blood and platelet donations amid a critical summer shortage that is putting lives at risk across the state.

Officials say donations are desperately needed, especially for:
-
Platelets – essential for cancer patients, trauma victims, and surgical procedures
-
Type B Blood (B+ and B–) – a rare type that is currently in dangerously low supply
-
Type O Blood (O+ and O–) – the universal donor type, crucial in emergency situations
Platelets have a short shelf life and must be used quickly, making immediate donations vital. Mississippi Blood Services encourages residents to donate at their Flowood Center or visit a mobile blood drive nearby.
Walk-ins are welcome, and donors can find a nearby location or drive by visiting msblood.com.
“Be the reason someone lives,” the organization urged in a statement. “Every donation can make a lifesaving difference.”
