Meridian Police leadership joins WALT News Talk to discuss promotions, Real-Time Crime Center, and new youth curfew

Meridian Police Chief Malachi Sanders, along with Assistant Chiefs Dareall Thompson and Patrick Gale, joined WALT News Talk hosts Roger Burke and Rob Allen on Friday morning, Aug. 29, to discuss recent changes within the department and upcoming public safety initiatives.

Thompson, who was promoted from Acting Captain to Assistant Chief on Aug. 21, will serve as director of operations, overseeing patrol, criminal investigations, special operations, and the gang unit. Gale, who has been serving as assistant chief, will continue as director of administrative operations, managing the Real-Time Crime Center, facilities, budget, and analytics.

The conversation also highlighted progress with the Real-Time Crime Center, which will feature a city-wide camera system, gunshot detection, and license plate readers.

In addition, Sanders and Thompson addressed the city’s new youth curfew, which takes effect Sept. 1. From Sunday through Thursday, the curfew runs from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., and from midnight to 6 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Sanders noted the start time could move earlier if violations increase. Thompson added the curfew will also apply during school hours, with minors seen out in the community subject to enforcement.

The segment also included a lighthearted moment, as the hosts presented Thompson with a fake Oscar for “Best Acting Captain in a Leading Role” — a nod to his former title and a running joke on the morning show.

Queen City Newsfeed congratulates Assistant Chief Thompson on his promotion and thanks Chief Sanders and Assistant Chief Gale for joining the program.
