FEMA warns Mississippi disaster survivors of assistance scam

JACKSON – The Federal Emergency Management Agency is warning Mississippi disaster survivors about scammers asking for money to complete disaster assistance applications.

FEMA said scammers are targeting survivors by requesting a $150 payment to complete an application for assistance.

The agency said it does not charge anyone to apply for disaster assistance. FEMA is urging residents not to send money or share personal information with anyone claiming payment is required.

Officials said FEMA staff always carry official photo identification, and residents should confirm they are speaking with an agency employee before providing any information.

FEMA said it works with the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Department of Justice to protect disaster assistance and investigate fraud.

Anyone who suspects fraud can call the Disaster Fraud Hotline at 866-720-5721 or visit fema.gov/disaster-fraud.
