A Mississippi man was arrested Monday after driving to a security barricade near the U.S. Capitol with a handgun on his lap, according to WLOX.
Shortly before 11:30 a.m. July 13, 67-year-old Wendell J. Royster of Columbia drove a rented Ford Bronco to the North Barricade on Constitution Avenue and asked a U.S. Capitol Police officer for directions to the U.S. Supreme Court.
The officer noticed a handgun on Royster’s lap and ordered him to raise his hands, officials said. A team of Capitol Police officers surrounded the vehicle and took Royster into custody.
Police said Royster was arrested within two minutes of arriving at the barricade.
Royster was charged with carrying a pistol without a license and possessing a firearm without a permit.
