The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is reminding residents to take precautions as hot August temperatures continue across the state.
MEMA warned that prolonged exposure to heat can lead to heat exhaustion, heat stroke and other heat-related illnesses.
Officials encourage residents to stay in air-conditioned areas when possible and to bring pets indoors during periods of extreme heat.
People should also drink plenty of water before they feel thirsty and wear light, loose-fitting clothing.
MEMA stressed that children, older adults and pets should never be left inside a vehicle, even for a short period of time.
Residents are also encouraged to check on friends, family members and neighbors, particularly during extended periods of hot weather.
Officials say taking simple precautions can help reduce the risk of heat-related illness.
