STATEWIDE — The Mississippi Office of the State Fire Marshal is urging residents to check their smoke alarms following the time change.
The office’s safety guidance calls for testing alarms at least once a month using the test button and replacing alarms when they are 10 years old. It says alarms should be placed in every sleeping area, in common hallways and on every level of a home.
Families should make sure everyone recognizes the alarm’s sound, knows how to respond and has an escape plan with a meeting place outside, according to the office.
“Make sure everyone knows how to escape a home fire, where to meet outside, and how to call for help. Never go back inside a burning building for any reason. These steps are what save lives,” said State Fire Marshal and Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney.
