MERIDIAN, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – City safety officials continue to advise residents of designated areas of Druid Hills to evacuate due to a dam breach in an upper lake.
“As of 8:30 p.m., the third lake at Druid Hills is at maximum capacity,” the City’s Public Safety Director Doug Stephens said. “It is still receiving water from the upper lakes.”
Earlier Wednesday, a dam breach caused overflows in the second and third lakes.
Stephens warned that if either of the two dams fails the following areas will most likely be flooded:
• Oak Drive
• Spruce Street
• Walnut Street
• Cherry Street
• Elm Drive
• Edgewood Drive
• Areas at the intersection of North Hills Street and 26th Street
Evacuation was and continues to be advised for those residents who live directly downstream of the third lake.
“Due to expected overnight rainfall, we advise those who have not to evacuate the affected area,” Stephens said.
Safety officials will continue to monitor the situation.
“When the lake is at a safer level, we will advise further actions,” Stephens said.
Rain is expected over the next three days for the Meridian area, which could have a major impact on the situation.
“Hopefully, we won’t get a heavy amount of rain, which could cause a runoff,” Stephens said.
