Police: No Active Shooter in Meridian Religious Facility Disturbance; One in Custody After Reported Assault

MERIDIAN, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – An incident that prompted a large law enforcement response at the Islamic Center of Mississippi and Alabama on Friday afternoon was not an active shooter situation, according to Meridian police.

Meridian Police Chief Deborah Naylor-Young, who was on the scene along with other city and county first responders, said, “This was more or less a disturbance.”

Law enforcement officials told reporters at the scene that the incident involved an altercation between at least two individuals. A male suspect reportedly had a weapon and assaulted another person with it before attempting to flee. He was apprehended by a nearby Meridian Police Department officer shortly after.

The incident occurred just before 2 p.m. at the center located at 4329 Highway 45. Initial reports indicated that subjects had been shot or stabbed at the location, but police quickly determined those claims to be untrue.

“Authorities are still investigating the situation; however, there is no threat to the community,” Chief Naylor-Young said.

MPD is continuing its investigation. The name of the suspect and details about potential charges have not yet been released.
