NEWTON, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – The Newton Municipal School District begins its new school year today, with students returning to classrooms across the city.
To ensure safety during high-traffic times, the Newton Police Department will have an increased presence during morning hours near schools. Drivers are reminded to stay alert, follow posted speed limits in school zones, and be cautious around buses and crosswalks.
Motorists must also comply with Nathan’s Law, which requires all vehicles to stop at least 10 feet from a school bus with flashing red lights, regardless of the direction of travel — unless a physical barrier separates the lanes.
Penalties under Nathan’s Law include:
-
First offense: $350 to $750 fine
-
Second offense: Up to $1,500 fine, possible jail time, and license suspension
Officials urge drivers to remain vigilant and help ensure a safe start to the school year for students and staff.
