MERIDIAN, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – Costumed canines will take center stage in downtown Meridian next month as part of the city’s Mardi Gras celebration, with the return of the Krewe de Barkus dog costume contest and parade benefiting local animal welfare organizations.
Poplar Springs Animal Hospital and Animal Medical Supply are presenting the event, scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 7, 2026, on the City Hall lawn.
The costume contest will begin at 11 a.m., followed by the parade at noon. Organizers say all participants must arrive by 10:30 a.m. for lineup.
A $10 entry fee, payable by cash or check, is required to participate. Organizers say prizes will be awarded to six winners. Proceeds from the event will support the Lauderdale County Animal Shelter and Roadside Rescue.
Entry forms and fees may be submitted ahead of time at Poplar Springs Animal Hospital or Animal Medical Supply, or on the day of the event at the PSAH/AMS table.
Organizers are encouraging pet owners to register early rather than waiting until the day of the parade.
