MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) – A major announcement was made in Marion this morning.

The town was one of twelve to receive T-Mobile’s Hometown Grant, providing nearly 50,000 dollars in funding to upcoming and ongoing projects in communities across the country.

“So we’re very excited that T-Mobile has chipped in to our vision. only 12 out of 1,500 recipients were able to capture this funding and we’re excited about it and we’re thankful that we were in the number. This was the last time they would be accepting applications for the Hometown Community Grant and so we’re glad that we were able to get in and that we’re going to get some funding out of it,” said Mayor Larry Gill.

The funding will be used in Marion to continue construction on Marion’s new town hall, as well as fund a park with a walking track, playground, and pickleball courts in the lot next door.

This is also the last round of Hometown Grants from T-Mobile, with the program being discontinued next quarter.

“So this quarter, we had 1,500 applicants for our last quarter ever being done, and this is one of 12 areas that won the grant. That is a huge deal. Mrs. Ward and Ward and the mayor, the heart that they put into the community, but also Marion’s story was huge. We felt like we had to make sure that we provided that olive branch to bring the vision into fruition,” said Kali Stone, with T-Mobile.

“This is like the push that we needed to make sure that we’re right there and finishing out this park for our citizens and people in our community. We’re excited about it,” said Mayor Gill.
