JACKSON, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) — The Mississippi Department of Public Safety is reminding residents that a new driver’s education requirement for first-time drivers will take effect next year.
Beginning July 1, 2027, all new drivers seeking a Mississippi driver’s license will be required to complete a driver’s education course before becoming licensed.
The department is encouraging families and prospective drivers to begin planning now by reviewing available training options.
In addition, the Department of Public Safety noted that beginning July 1, 2026, only driver’s education certificates issued by the Mississippi Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) will be accepted for hardship driver’s license applicants.
To help residents prepare for the upcoming changes, DPS has published a list of approved driver’s education providers on its website at dps.ms.gov, allowing prospective students to locate an approved program near their community.
State officials say the changes are designed to ensure new drivers receive standardized instruction before obtaining a Mississippi driver’s license.
More information, including a list of approved driver’s education providers, is available at dps.ms.gov.
