LAUDERDALE, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – Lauderdale County received strong returns from its annual delinquent tax sale held on Aug. 31, according to an update presented to the Board of Supervisors on Monday.
Tax Collector Doris Spidle reported that 4,326 parcels with a total value of $5,369,910.43 were up for bid in this year’s sale. Of those, 4,126 parcels were sold at a total value of $5,317,070.44.
“The grand total collected at the sale was $5,860,775.44,” she said.
Spidle noted that the overbid—the amount bid above what was owed—surpassed $543,000, seeing significant growth after the county moved the tax sale online.
“Since we’ve gone online, it’s almost doubled,” she said.
Spidle also provided an update on 2025 tax collections. The Tax Collector’s office billed $31,841,957.28 in personal property and has collected $31,064,928.08, leaving $1,051,288.09 unpaid.
“Those amounts are turned over to the collection agency, and they do pursue that. We continue to collect that throughout the year but through the agency,” she said.
Regarding mobile home taxes, the county billed $556,445.51 and collected $555,456.06 across 3,355 receipts as of Sept. 30. Spidle stated that 1,334 receipts remained uncollected by Sept. 30, totaling approximately $149,672.56.
“Those are also turned over to the collection agency,” she said.
Funds will continue to come in as the collection agency works to settle outstanding accounts going forward. Spidle added that the county maintains a good relationship with the agency, which is typically successful in collecting outstanding debts.
