TOOMSUBA, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – Salem Baptist Church honored a longtime churchgoer Sunday morning. The Toomsuba church gave John Johnson a pin for 65 years of attendance.

Pastor Joe Jackson presented the pin to Johnson on Nov. 1. After that, Jackson sent the news and photos to Queen City Newsfeed because he thought readers might enjoy them.

A church with deep roots

Johnson’s milestone is part of a long history at Salem. The church started in 1838, according to a state historical marker. So the church is 188 years old this year. That means Johnson’s 65 years cover more than one third of its history.

The Mississippi Department of Archives and History put up the marker in 2015. It says Salem is one of the oldest congregations in Lauderdale County. Also, the church stands in an area once called Alamucha. The marker says the church and its cemetery are among the last pieces of that early settlement.

Today, you can find the church near Toomsuba at Kewanee Road and Salem Church Road.
