Authorities have released new information in the death of Delta State University student De’Martravion “Trey” Reed, whose body was found on campus earlier this week.

De’Martravion Reed’s manner of death has officially been ruled a suicide, according to the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office.

On Monday, September 15, Cleveland Police officers responded around 7:32 a.m. to a call reporting a deceased individual near the central campus pickleball courts. When they arrived, they found the body of 21-year-old Reed, a student from Grenada, Mississippi.

The Bolivar County Coroner responded to the scene and conducted a preliminary examination, which showed no signs of foul play.

On September 17, the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy. Findings were consistent with the initial investigation, determining Reed’s cause of death to be hanging and the manner of death as suicide. Officials noted that final toxicology results are still pending and may take two to four weeks to complete.

As part of the investigation, all files and materials have been turned over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for review.

“Our thoughts and prayers remain with Reed’s family and friends during this very difficult time. We want to encourage anyone who is struggling to reach out for help,” said Cleveland Police Chief Travis Tribble.

Mississippi Department of Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell added: “My condolences go out to the family of Trey Reed and all who knew and loved him. I applaud the quick work by the Cleveland Police Department, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, and Delta State University to bring closure to his family, and I condemn the rumors circulating regarding his death.”
